The sequence the church keeps

In the Orthodox tradition a burial follows a settled sequence: the service in church or at home, the farewell, the procession to the cemetery, and prayer at the grave. Most families meet these questions for the first time on a day when they have no strength left for arrangements. Our part is to put the steps in order for you.

Cemetery headstones come at the end of that sequence, not the start. Custom is to set the monument once the ground has settled, and until then a wooden or metal cross stays on the grave. The direction the cross faces, the language of the inscription and the choice of imagery are matters to raise with the priest, and we help you prepare for that conversation.

Frequently asked questions

How long after the funeral is a monument set?

Families usually wait for the ground to settle, which normally takes about a year, with a temporary cross on the grave until then. The exact timing depends on the soil and on the cemetery administration's rules, and we check both in advance for you.

What should we agree with the priest about the cross and inscription?

The shape and orientation of the cross, the wording of the inscription, any scriptural line, and where a photograph may be placed. Individual churches and cemeteries set their own requirements, so we approve the drawing before any stone is cut.

Which days are kept for remembrance?

The Orthodox rite marks the third, ninth and fortieth day, and then the anniversary. We plan transport and tidying of the grave ahead of those dates, so that the family is not left arranging things at the last moment.
